Cyntoia Brown A girl from America Was sentenced to 60 years in prison at the age of 16. only at the age of 67 would Cyntoia have a chance for early release. However, the governor of Tennessee has granted her clemency this week.
In 2006 Cyntoia was tried as an adult and found guilty. She then received a life sentence. Already at the age of 16 Cyntoia had been through a lot of hardships in her life. She didn’t have a father and her mother was heavily addicted and was often drunk. Later Brown was raped several times and ended up in the hands of a pimp.
Convicted of murder.
But her hardships didn’t end there. She was picked up by the 43-year-old property trader Johnny Allen, who took her to his house. According to Brown, Allen had many weapons in his house and she feared for her life. In the end she shot Allen and took some of his money and weapons. The jury didn’t believe her story and she was therefore convicted of murder.
Her story drew the attention of many people. Some celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Rihanna openly showed their support and there was a documentary made about her life. Luckily, now that she has been granted clemency things are finally starting to look up for her. However, she is not free yet. She won’t be released until August and will be on parole for another 10 years.
Now that Brown has received clemency there is more hope that some of the laws in the US will change. Many want that people who are underaged cannot receive such a heavy sentence nor should they be put in prison alongside adult convicts.
